Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Old Basing 7th May 2006

After the rain that had forced all three games on Saturday to be abandoned without a ball being bowled there was no surprise either that the pitch was on the slow side or that James elected to bowl on winning the toss.

It didn't take long for T&T to make the first breakthrough when Bob got one to swing back through the gate of Paul Turner; his second wicket soon followed but was from a far less impressive delivery as Huntingdon top edged a long hop that James caught running back from the gully.

Arsalan had bowled an impressive opening spell and finally got the wicket he deserved when he bowled D Turner off his pads to leave the score on 39-3 off 15 overs. Whilst this looks like a good start for T&T it was in fact as good as it got for Old Basing as Rog and Rags went through the middle order like the proverbial dose of salts; Rog's first wicket was his 250th for the club, the fifth bowler to reach the landmark for the club. The pick of the batsmen was D Belcher who played well for his 20 before falling for Rags' sucker punch to be caught by Hammed Ali at mid on.

Hammed was introduced in to the attack for his first senior bowl for the club and managed to pick up the final wicket with the final ball of his first over to leave Old Basing 55 all out.

Whilst this was far under what would have been a par score on a slow pitch and slow outfield, the Old basing innings had not included any boundaries, it would be hard work for the T&T batsman to get the runs. There was the additional factor of the weather apparently closing in with the forecast rain.

James and Khadim opened the batting and to the second ball of the innings Khadim had a yorker land flush on his foot which caused him discomfort for the rest of the innings. James and Khadim were able to keep the scoreboard ticking and find the boundary before James became the first and only wicket when he was adjudged lbw to Mirza.

Khadim and Meady were then able to see T&T through to a comfortable victory although it wasn't that long after the game ended that the seemingly inevitable rain started to fall.
