Theale & Tilehurst Under 17 XI vs Thatcham 11th May 2006

This game marked the return of u17s cricket for T&T although half of the team also qualify for u15s cricket. Ian won the toss and on a damp pitch put Thatcham in to bat. Indy and Arsalan both bowled tight opening spells with Arsalan picking up the first wicket when he clean bowled Warburton. The main player for Thatcham in this age group is Donnelly who has scored runs against us in lower age groups in previous years so there was much relief when an away swinger from Chris found his leading edge to be caught at mid-off. The change bowlers kept a tight grip on the scoring rate with Oneal managing to pick up two late wickets as the batsman struggled to come to terms with his variations. A score of 74-6 represented a good effort in the field and probably placed Thatcham 15-20 runs below par for the pitch.

Indy and Oneal opened the batting for T&T and Indy went early to the pacy and impressive Martin; Louis had made a big score at Thatcham last year so when Martin squeezed an excellent yorker past his defence to make the score 12-2 Thatcham felt that they were very much in the game, which they were. However, the partnership that followed between Oneal and Ian as they added 43 for the 3rd wicket was the decisive one of the game; both were able to find the boundary regularly including a beautiful pick up shot over backward square leg for six by Oneal. Neither was able to make it through to the end and as the light was rapidly deteriorating it was left to Arsalan to hit the winning boundary to give T&T an excellent victory.
