Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Yateley 13th May 2006

With the game against Purley having been rained off last week this match represented T&T’s debut in the Berkshire League Premier Division. With Cat off on his holidays it was left to Meady to lead the team and he started well when by winning the toss and opted to put Yateley in to bat.

Doc and Chris opened the bowling and the first breakthrough came when Doc trapped Viner palpably lbw, Rawat soon followed caught at first slip and this seemed to represent a decent start by the T&T bowlers. However, Stuart Lipo, who had scored a century against us two weeks ago in a pre-season warm up game, was still there and looking in ominously good form.

Lipo was joined at the crease by Ablett and their partnership of 61 for the 3rd wicket proved to be the backbone of the innings. Lipo was playing relentlessly well but Ablett was having more than a touch of good fortune, as Doc observed he must have had Whiskas for lunch he had that many lives.

Ablett’s luck finally run out when he inside edged a drive in to his stumps and the rest of the innings was the remaining batsmen playing in support of Lipo as he closed in on and then went past the century mark. However, at tea the thought was that a score of 203 was seen as a decent effort in the field and a score that could be successfully chased.

When James and Chilly put on 44 for the first wicket in relatively untroubled style confidence was starting to grow but unfortunately the dismissal of Chilly heralded a classic T&T collapse as 6 wickets fell for 24 runs to realistically put the game out of reach for T&T. Paul (henceforth to be known as Nelson as he came in to the game unable to bowl due to an injured arm and ended it with a runner when he injured a leg) and Chris started a rebuilding job with a partnership of 39 for the seventh wicket but when Chris was bowled by Tull the innings subsided to 119 all out to leave Yateley comfortable winners.
