Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Sandhurst 20th May 2006

After a delayed start and a reduction to an 84 over game play finally got underway with Sandhurst being put in to bat. With a very strong wind blowing across the ground whilst the pitch conditions were in the bowler's favour running in was hard work for the bowlers.

The first wicket wasn't long in coming with Cat taking a very good low catch at first slip to give Doc his first wicket and the second soon followed with Crofty taking an equally good catch running back at cover. However, the bowlers weren't having it all their own way with Tutty and Drake coming together to add 42 for the third wicket before Doc dismissed both in quick succession.

The main partnership of the innings was 66 for the fourth wicket, a partnership that was dominated by Sandhurst skipper Simon Hards who hit the ball very hard and on occasions a long way as he reached a very good fifty. Fortunately before he was able to take the game out of reach Cat found his outside edge for a catch behind. From this stage on the T&T bowlers kept chipping away at the Sandhurst lower order as the last six wickets fell for 37 runs; Doc returning to pick up two further wickets to finish with the excellent figures of 6-41.

158 did represent a decent batting effort by Sandhurst and batting second the runs would be difficult to get. The T&T reply didn't start well with Cat going early and by the fifteenth over the score had become 30-3.

Chilly and Crofty were able to steady things and put on 43 for the fourth wicket but we needed another similar partnership soon after to get right up to the total. Unfortunately this partnership was not forthcoming and no-one was able to stay with Crofty. When Crofty was eighth out with the score on 122 there were still 37 needed.

Doc and Fingers did their best to keep chipping away at the target with Doc able to find the occasional boundary and with two overs to go 13 were needed. Unfortunately only four runs were possible off the first five balls of the penultimate over and to the final ball of the over Doc was bowled trying to keep up with the rate.

This left a tricky situation for the final over, go for the nine runs needed for victory or bat out the over and take the points for draw. In the end the decision proved relatively straightforward as Baloch bowled a tight over that didn't provide the needed boundary ball in the over to stay with the rate. The last couple of balls were blocked out to complete a good match and a draw.
