Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Swindon NALGO 1st July 2006

This was an important game for us against the team that was bottom of the table, a win would have put some distance between us and them going in to the second half of the season.

Cat won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good surface at Bradfield but unfortunately against some good opening bowling we struggled to get the start we needed. At 52-4 we were in danger of not getting ourselves in to the game but a partnership between Meady and Jamil took us past 100 and a second decent partnership between Meady and Chris took us to a total that looked at least competitive; Meady was the pick of the batsman and played very well for his first 1st XI fifty. However, the concern at tea was that a total of 187 was probably 20-30 short of par for the conditions.

However, if we could take early wickets we could get ourselves right back in to the game and put the pressure back on to Swindon. Unfortunately when the chances came along we were unable to take them, both the openers were dropped off relatively straightforward chances and both went on to capitalise on the second life they were given; Beale playing aggressively and striking one towering six over long on whilst Khan played patiently to anchor the innings.

When Chris came back and took two quick wickets in his second spell it looked like we might be able to snatch something for the game but Rahman came in and struck the ball very cleanly to keep Swindon ahead of the rate and it was him that struck the winning boundary in the penultimate over. This was a poor result for us and means we will be spending the next few weeks looking over our shoulders rather than just being able to concentrate on our own games.
