Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Wargrave 2nd July 2006

With James still injured Osman was captain for this game; his first act as captain was to incorrectly identify a £2 coin as a 10p coin and therefore lose the toss (apparently they always land on different sides but I can’t remember which way round each is supposed to land).

Fortunately Osman was better with the ball and took the first wicket when Jeffery got an edge on one to the ‘keeper. Bob soon followed up with two wickets in one over and it looked like we might be able to make some serious inroads in to the Wargrave line-up. However, Rimmer and Rimmer came together in a very good partnership for the fourth wicket until on a dry and abrasive pitch I managed to turn a couple of balls enough to take their stumps. Robinson then came in and took up the lead role as Wargrave sought a total of over 200 on what was a very hot afternoon in the field which they just achieved.

This should have been a gettable total but with a weakened batting line-up we needed a decent start, unfortunately we didn’t get one with only Osman and Rags of the top seven making it in to double figures. This left us with little chance of victory in what was a straight forty over a side game but we were enjoying some last wicket fun, Bob nearly taking short mid wicket’s head off with a pull for four, when I got what must be the worst lbw decision I’ve ever had. I thought I’d got a bit of a rough lbw decision on Saturday with it hitting me right at the top of the pads and probably too high but this one hit me just above the box; either my tape measure has lied to me consistently over the last few years and in reality I’m only 3ft 6” tall or there was no way on earth that ball was hitting the stumps. Anyway, it didn’t change the result of the game which was a very comfortable win for Wargrave.
