Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Purley 2 8th July 2006

BACK

Report by Chef

The day started very badly.  I was Tea boy.  I think Micky won the toss but either way we started in the field.  Hall and Denton started off well but Chef got the break through with the big wicket of Denton (in more than one way) caught behind.

Shortly after this, with the field set perfectly Watkins, who seemed to be struggling, looped one to mid off but was dropped.  He and Hall put on 38 before Hall was again caught behind by Tim off Rog.  Nash followed soon after.  At 78 for 4 on a good pitch, we looked in a decent position but the drop of Watkins turned out to be expensive as he and Senniapan put on 109 with Watkins dismissed on 63 caught in front by Rog.

I pointed out that having spotted Eddie running around at mid wicket and Mike absolutely stationary at gully, with no disrespect to Eddie but perhaps we should swap them.  With flashbacks of the 2004 season the next ball went flying to Mike who took a diving catch to dismiss Senniapan.

Reber then batted well as we took regular wickets but again, we left the real breakthrough's too late and didn't have enough time at the tail.  In hindsight quiet the opposite problem to Purley.

We left the field chasing 256.

After Tea Eddie was soon dismissed.  Rog and Mickey started to get going but Rog was dismissed in a more than recognisable way.  I won't explain in case other teams are reading but if you know Rog, you'll know how he got out.  He came in vowing never to get out to that shot again, so I promptly asked if that meant his retirement?

It was then Mickey who joined in with the deja vu.  As soon as he got into the twenties he spooned up the simplest of catches.  There was then a succession of wickets (mainly self inflicted) and at 90 for 7 with plenty of overs left there only looked like one result.  On that basis I thought I'd have a bit of a go and again, if you know me, you'll know exactly how I got out, only I was sensible enough not to claim that I would never be dismissed that way again.  In fact my money would be on next week.

It was then left to Mo and Hammad to sacrifice their wickets.  However they had different plans.  Still with plenty of overs left they opted to get some batting practice in.  They both batted excellently to deny Purley the win and gain another valuable batting point.    Whilst morally it was a loss, Mo and Hammad's innings felt like a victory.  Based on our performance of one good week, one bad week, lets hope next week follows on.
