Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Yateley 15th July 2006

BACK

Report by Fingers

Coming in to this game Yateley were probably the form team in the division with a run of victories, with us still at the wrong end of the table it was obviously going to be a tough afternoon. On a hot afternoon and with a flat looking pitch Cat won the toss and the decision was to chase.

Viner got the innings off to a good start for Yateley using his height to good effect by getting forward and playing the drive well. The first wicket to fall was Shafi who was caught at extra cover off Jamil which brought Saniga to the crease. As someone who looks at the Berkshire League message board this name was well known and his recent exploits in a midweek game were cause for concern; he seemed a little shaky at the start but just when he seemed to be getting in to full swing he cut one to point off Jamil, the problem was the straightforward catch went down. The inevitable boundary followed immediately and in Jamil’s next over the first four balls were all despatched to the boundary and just as we were no doubt all thinking how costly could the dropped catch could be he skied one to mid wicket.

Viner then had good partnerships with Lawrence and Lipo as Yateley threatened an absolutely enormous total. Viner reached an excellent century before being dismissed by Crofty and as quick runs were sought wickets started to fall on a regular basis. I managed to pick up two wickets with the last two balls of the innings which managed to secure full bowling points and in a moment of self congratulation it also brought up my 600th wicket for the club.

Chasing 268 was always going to be a tall order and was dependant on a good start and one of the batters matching Viner’s century. James and Cat got the innings off to a promising start putting on 31 for the first wicket before Cat nicked Lipo to first slip who took a juggling catch. Lipo’s next over though proved to be the crucial one as he dismissed Chilly, Crofty and Mike in the space of four balls; 36-4 meant that the best we could hope for was a draw and this would have to be done with ten batsmen with Paul unable to bat because of an injured hamstring.

James and Jamil steadied the ship briefly before both were dismissed with the score on 61 and then it was about damage limitation. Doc and Lemmy secured a couple of batting points before the inevitable was confirmed when Saniga came on and mopped up the tail in quick order.
