This was the last warm up game in advance of the league season starting next week and was against fellow premier division side Yateley; albeit a weakened Yateley 1st Xi compared to their usual strength on this occasion.
Yateley won the toss and elected to bat and Viner and Shafi initially seemed to justify this decision by putting 33 on in quick time. However, both went in quick succession, Viner lbw to Doc (apparently the third or fourth time in a row they’ve played against each other and Doc has got him lbw) and Shafi edging Jamil to the ‘keeper.
With the openers gone the run rate slowed and in truth it never really got going again. Having gone all around the park last week I managed to bowl ten economical overs and Andy W and Simon also bowled tight spells. Wickets fell at fairly regular intervals to keep a lid on the scoring rate and Sunil picked up a couple of late wickets in his first spell for the club.
The Yateley innings closed on 172-9 which looked to be short of what was needed in the conditions.
The T&T reply started similarly to the Yateley innings, a reasonable start but then both openers going in quick succession to leave us on 44-2. Sunil batting at three was looking scratchy at the start of his innings until he decided to resort to drastic measures; his first scoring shot for the club being a six in to car park. His next five scoring shots were all boundaries before he settled down and played in what is presumably more his accustomed style. Andy W was also playing well and together they put on an excellent partnership of 121 for the third wicket that took us to the verge of victory; both scoring their first fifties for the club in the process.
With 8 needed for victory and Jamil, down to bat at six, already showered and changed the inevitable happened in that a wicket fell. Crofty strode out to bat whilst pads were desperately sought for Mohammed who had been promoted to number six on the grounds of still being in his whites. Fortunately Crofty and Sunil saw us home to a 7 wicket victory with the best part of 14 overs to spare.
