After a run of close games I suppose we were going to end up on the wrong side of the result in one of them.
Rain during the week and on Friday evening had left the pitch in bowler friendly conditions and Cat again lost the toss. Inevitably we were put in to bat and soon Cat was ruing his luck for a second time as an inside edge went in to his pads and then back in to his stumps in the first over.
Micky and Cullum looked like they might do a rebuilding job when Micky went caught at cover. This started a trend of short partnerships that looked like they might salvage this innings only for a wicket to fall, invariably to an attacking shot which wasn’t really needed at the time.
The Crown Wood bowlers did well to keep the pressure on and gave very few bad balls to hit and it was left to the T&T tail to try and salvage the innings. Something that they couldn’t do and the innings closed on 111 in the 32nd over.
In fact the only thing the T&T tail had achieved was getting out in time to make Crown Wood have to bat before tea. Doc and Cullum opened the bowling and immediately had the Crown Wood openers in trouble. Hammond was the first to go palpably lbw to Doc and then Andy Wigmore (hereafter to be known as Syrup) took a sensational catch at short cover to get rid of Rubbani. There was also time for Doc to pick up the wicket of Graham before tea to leave the game evenly balanced at the break.
It wasn’t long after tea that Cullum clean bowled Handley and Doc had Godbole caught in the gully to leave Crown Wood at 33-5 and T&T now perhaps favourites. A partnership between Sergeant and Kalvetis got the Crown Wood innings back on a steadier footing but when they got in a horrible mess and Kalvetis was run out to leave the score 76-7 T&T remained favourites.
If you’re going to win defending 111 you have to take every chance that comes your way and unfortunately at this stage of the innings a couple of chances went down. However, at 101-9 and 11 still needed we were still right in the game; after our first couple of games we probably didn’t really feel that the games was that close at this point. The Crown Wood last pair though batted calmly and Taylor, looking a more than useful no.11, finally struck the winning runs to give Crown Wood the narrowest of victories.
