Having never played Grosvenor before I wondered what the atmosphere would be like. When Meady saw them huddled and jokingly mentioned about them having a team talk, the response "We don't need one for you lot" kind of implied it would be competitive.
Meady won the toss (I think) and elected to bowl. I opened the bowling with Ram and it was Ram who got the first strike, with Anwar lobbing it up to Pawan's safe hands. Bhatti and Kapoor then put together a good partnership although both were dropped (of my bowling!!!!) early on. I was bowling with the most control I've had in years and with the least luck I've had in years. Bowling straight at Bhatti stemmed the runs but it was once again the golden arm of Ager who broke the partnership by bowling Bhatti.
I know how Colin feels bowling excellently for loads of overs in one spell, gradually increasing the pressure, only to see Paul come on and clear up at the other end. I did pick up two caught behinds off rising offside deliveries but it was Paul who did the damage with his 6 wickets (and even with a dropped catch).
Paul cleaned up the familiar face of Mo in three balls with Mo being bowled during a typical Mo swipe. Although I say 6 wickets it was probably more like 5 as Mushy was given LBW on a ball that would otherwise have been a wide, let alone hitting the stumps.
We bowled them out for 154, although the 22 wides don't give us credit for how well we bowled.
After a fantastic tea which I grazed on for the rest of the day we set off for the 154 with 52 overs to get them in. All we needed to do was just stay there, as we had enough overs and run rate was never going to be a problem. At 20 for 2 we weren't looking good but Meady and Nehal got us back on track until Nehal was bowled on 8, leaving us 65 for 3.
It was Hammad and Meady that then scored regularly, with Meady reaching his 50 of 82 balls. Hammad and Meady saw us easily home in the 37th over with Hammad 35 not out of 45 balls and Meady 60 not out of 96 balls.
We got 30 points and Grosvenor got 5. It was a good spirited game and they were a good bunch of lads and it is quite obvious that on their day they can be devastating but I do wonder if a team talk would have helped them today.
