After a run of poor results we needed a win. After overnight and morning showers both teams were keen to bat first and it was Hugh Asquith of Peppard who won the toss and put us in.
Wiggy and Cat got us off to a decent start before Wiggy went for one big drive too many and was caught behind off Paul Vines. What followed was a succession of small partnerships, we never lost wickets in clusters but there was never a partnership of real substance that threatened to take us past 200. As it was we reached 182-7 which was seen as being just about par for the conditions.
To show the success of the T&T youth system two products of it opened the bowling. Osman was the first to strike when he had Ronnie Brock caught and bowled first ball and he later followed this up with the key wicket of Hugh Asquith. However, it was Mo that proved to be the main wicket taker; bowling with good pace and at times being quite hostile he caused all the batsman he bowled to problems and ended up with his first 1st team five-fer.
Mo's first wicket was the important one of Andy Watts and this was also Mike's first of an unusual five outfield catches in the innings. It didn't seem to matter where we put him the Peppard batsman managed to find him. Alongside Mike's efforts in the field Wiggy also took three excellent slip catches.
When the Peppard score reached 47-7 it looked like we might go straight through them but as is often the case the tiring of the opening bowlers coincided with some late order resistance. The biggest partnership of the day was the one for the Peppard ninth wicket as Trevor Blair and Roy Hayden both played sensibly and it was the introduction of the slower bowlers that finally wrapped up the innings.
This was an excellent fielding performance, all ten wickets fell to catches and only one chance went down. Something we need to keep going over the next few weeks.
