Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Woodcote 23rd June 2007

BACK

Report by Fingers

The Village People of Woodcote have had a good start to their first season in the premier division and in what were testing conditions due to the prevailing weather this was going to be a tough game. It was made potentially tougher when Cat lost another toss and we were predictably put in to bat.

Cat was the first to go caught at short leg and he was soon followed by Cullum, not before he produced the shot of of the day though with an exquisite cover drive.

When James was the fifth out for a battling 21 with the score on 58 it seemed like we might get rolled over. Sunil and Osman though had different ideas and started building a partnership that was going to give us something to bowl at. Sunil dealt with any poor deliveries severely as he played what was his best league innings of the season so far and Osman showed skill and patience with the bat as they put on 79 for the sixth wicket.

When the early predictions came true that the most likely way that the partnership would end was by way of run out the final wickets went in a rush either side of a brief rain shower during which tea was taken. Just a note here for fans of cheese and crisp sandwiches - Woodcote away is the match for you.

Whilst 145 hadn't put the game beyond Woodcote's reach it was going to be a tough total to chase. This was shown when three wickets fell with the score on 12 as Cullum and Mo both bowled well initially with the old ball.

When the seventh wicket fell in the 26th over only one result seemed possible but Silver and Higley showed an application that some of the other batsman seemed to be lacking as they set about repelling the T&T attack. There was a question over the Woodcote tactics though; in batting out for a draw and stonewalling to such an extent that no runs were being scored they weren't going to get any more points from a losing draw than they would a loss. With them being near the top of the table this did seem to lack some sense.

Finally the wicket of Silver went to Doc and then Cullum and Mo were brought back to try and finish things off. Initially it took a while but when Crawford edged Mo behind for the ninth wicket we only had to wait two more balls before the tenth fell to the second ball of the 47th over of the innings, the second time we have won a game this season in extra overs having been bowled out early.
