Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs BCS 25th August 2007

BACK

Report by Fingers

This was an important game for the 2nds; a win would mean that in terms of finishing second our fate would be in our own hands on the final weekend, a loss and there was a chance that Woodley would overtake us.

Meady won the toss and put BCS in to bat on what looked like it might be a helpful surface. Pawan and Chris initially kept it tight but the first breakthrough didn’t come until the first ball of the 14th over when Aygzz had Chamberlain lbw; albeit to one that looked significantly less out than an earlier appeal at that end.

What proved to be the defining partnership of the match then followed between Drain and Eaglesham as they put on over 100 for the second wicket. When the second wicket fell we realised how close we had been to being through most of their batting as wickets then started to fall at quite a rate. The innings closed at 193-7 which was seen as being about par for the conditions.

The T&T reply started in a similar vein to the BCS innings; runs were hard to come by but there was no rush of wickets either. When Meady and Nehal were together we looked like we were on course but the partnership ended in freakish circumstances; as he was completing a second run the ball being thrown back in hit Nehal on the back of his head and he was forced to retire hurt. As the new player, Hammad, played himself in some of the momentum was lost.

The run rate required never got much above a run a ball but the big two or three overs to get us ahead of the rate never really came; as the pressure built at the end wickets started to fall but only six runs were needed off the last over.

The fact that we only got three and ended up with a losing draw is something we are likely to look back on with some regret. Three more runs here and that last wicket at Mortimer West End and we would have been unassailable in second place. As it is Woodley’s 35 points against MWE mean they have leapfrogged us in to second place and we go in to the last weekend not only needing to beat Crowthorne but hoping that Bradfield can do us a favour against Woodley.
