Theale and Tilehurst Friendly XI vs ICL Bracknell 16th September 2007

BACK

Report by Fingers

In last year’s game against ICL Bracknell we had put up a pretty lame performance. Fortunately this year’s game was a much better affair.

On winning the toss James elected to bat second; Bob and Arsalan immediately justified their taking of the new ball with a wicket apiece to bring to the crease our very own Rog. Along with Wyatt he started to rebuild the innings until tamely holing out at cover. Kimber soon followed and at 56-4 we looked to be on top; however, after a shaky start Wyatt was starting to play positively and looked particularly strong straight down the ground.

A partnership of 61 for the fourth wicket followed until Sunil took two wickets in two balls to leave the score 117-6. The hat-trick ball was survived by Bishop who then played very well in support of Wyatt.

The next key point of the game was one that threatened to turn the game in an unsatisfactory manner. When he was on about 80 Wyatt skied a knee high full toss to Nehal on the deep square leg boundary and promptly made to leave the field (in fact he made it about half way off); however, he was soon on his way back as much to everyone’s astonishment the square leg umpire had his arm out signalling a no ball. Wyatt soon completed his hundred, an excellent innings even if some of the gloss was taken of by his fortunate escape, and with Bishop took the score towards 250.

After a couple of late wickets the innings closed on 250-8. On a good wicket and with the outfield as fast as it has been all season this was still a gettable total for a decent T&T batting line up; especially as Sunil suggested that their bowling line up wasn’t the strongest.

Dave and Aygzz opened the batting for T&T and got the innings off to a decent start before Aygzz went lbw to Rog. Dave then upped the tempo of the innings as he played excellent shots all round the wicket; his fifty came up off 47 balls and it was something of a surprise when he went shortly afterwards for 63.

Sunil and Nehal kept the momentum of the innings going in a partnership of 58 for the 3rd wicket before Nehal was caught behind; when Sunil went with the score on 172 the finishing line looked a long way off. However, Spike hit a brisk 37 off 24 balls to keep us up with the rate and the pressure on the ICL bowlers. There was still work to be done though and fortunately the T&T lower order was up to the task. At the end of the 39th over the scores were level and victory was then immediately secured off the first ball of the final over.
