Report by Fingers
This was the first quarter final match a T&T youth side has played since Osman was captain of the u15s so that must be at least 5-6 years.
After lengthy discussions before the game on what he should do if he won the toss Harry did win and elected to field. Things started well when Clarke was run out with the score still on zero and when Harry and Mike both picked up wickets in their second overs, the latter to an excellent catch by Rob in the deep, Purley had stuttered to 9-3.
In truth the Purley innings never really recovered. McGiveron and Hillier threatened to take the innings on with a partnership of 26 for the fifth wicket but Harry re-entered the attack to dismiss Hillier, this time to a good catch by James, and the score fell away from 41-4 to 52 all out. The wickets were evenly shared out between Harry, Mike, Luke and Rob in what was probably our best performance in the field this season.
The group game between these two sides had an extraordinary finish and had eneded as a tie so there were no guarentees that we would knock the runs off easily. This point was emphasised when Harry was run out off the first ball of the innings; when Chelsea and James, the latter also run out, soon followed we were really struggling.
The innings continued to follow a very similar pattern to the Purley innings; Andy and Luke put together a partnership of 21 for the fifth wicket but when Luke was dismissed a collapse followed as we went from 34-4 to 43-9. With ten runs still needed Purley were probably favourites for the first time all evening but Andy and Rob took some singles to start closing in on the total.
When Andy hit the final ball of the 18th over to bring the scores level minds turned back to the tie in the previous game; did anyone know what would happen if the game did end as a tie? Not to worry though as after five dot balls Rob took a single to give T&T victory and send us through to the semi finals. After the nerve wracking finishes to the last two group games I think those watching the u13s on a regular basis must be starting to run out of finger nails!
