Theale & Tilehurst Friendly 3rd XI vs Ascot 4th XI

6th June 2009

BACK

Report by Robbo. T and T 3rds Roll back the millennia.....

Headlines: El Presidente 84 (runs, not age) Che Guevara’s granddad 650 (age, not wickets).
The game started about half an hour late due to inclement weather and was reduced to 90 overs. Bob promptly lost the toss and we were inserted on what proved to be a far better wicket than anyone expected.

Having started the last few games in a slow fashion El Presidente and TMF ‘bludgeoned’ their way to 80 within the first 20 overs (congrats to TMF who managed to break his ‘6’ virginity – by about a foot!) before TMF fell to a good catch just after reaching fifty.

DocOc joined El Pres and they also put on fifty before Harry fell. Another partnership or two was required before 200 could be reached and fortunately two came along: El Presidente and Mouse putting on 39 and EP (again) and DM adding 47 in quick time, allowing Bob to declare on 231 (a lucky number for the thirds) after 46 overs.
Hearty congrats must go to Eddie for batting through the innings to end on 84 n.o. – i’m sure I won’t be able to replicate that when I ‘get on a bit’ – though I can report that his complexion was a trifle florid after running a couple of quick singles towards the end!

A pleasant tea followed, enlivened by some rather spicy pakora sauce, surprisingly provided by Mouse and this seemed to fire up Bob who took four quick wickets, including the one that took him to 650 for the club – more congrats required.
At 77 for 9 there looked little chance of Royal Ascot getting any batting points, but a stubborn stand of 51 took them to 129 before the final catch was thankfully taken by Noddy (someone will have to explain that nickname to him) in the gully. Mention must also be made of Grinders seven overs which only yielded 11 runs and two wickets.

Hopefully Bob can now go through the season without losing a Saturday game (your author being captain for the previous two weeks debacles) and we can ‘storm’ back into the giddy heights of Div 8!!!
