Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Crown Wood Friendly XI

21st June 2009

BACK

With another very young T&T side I was uncertain what to do at the toss; on a warm afternoon and with a used pitch conditions said bat first but did we have enough batting to justify that decision?  Fortunately I lost the toss and even better was any concerns I had about the strength of our batting order turned out to be misplaced.

We were put in to bat and got off to an absolute flier.  James took four boundaries off the first over and Charlie took his lead by taking two off the second.  The fifty partnership came up in no time but alas the partnership fell just short of the next landmark.  With James on 49 and the total on 99 James cut a ball straight to a grateful point who took the catch.

Charlie was then involved in another fifty partnership, this time with Wiggy, during which he went to his first fifty in senior cricket.  It was a fine innings and will hopefully be the first of many times he passes fifty.

Both Wiggy and Charlie went with the score on 154 but fortunately a series of decent contributions from the middle order ensured we posted a competitive total.  Andy played well for his 17 but it was Harry that led the way with a hard hit 40no that saw us up to 264-7.

In truth the Crown Wood innings never really got going.  Sarna and Cartledge went early on in consecutive overs and Wiggy and Bob both picked up their second wickets before retiring from the attack.

It was then left to Michael to run through a shortened Crown Wood batting line-up with three very good clean bowled dismissals.

The innings was left with Blaney and Knox at the crease.  Blaney is obviously a good striker of a cricket ball and fearing his innings was going to be cut short by the last man getting out decided he was going to hog the strike.  This led to some very easy runs being turned down at the start of overs but then some practically suicidal running off the last ball; quite why Knox was willing to co-operate in this remains lost on me.  However, after a short while the innings ended very predictably in one way (run out) but totally unpredictably in another (Blaney being run out when he initially refused to go for a single off the last ball of an over to keep him on strike).

So ended a good performance by T&T; perhaps I need to put out of my mind the age of the team when going out to do the toss in future weeks and just think about the potential of the side that we have.
