Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Aldermaston Friendly XI

On a hot afternoon, with a fast outfield and good pitch there was no hesitation in saying 'we'll have a bat thanks' when I won the toss; the possibility of being lynched if I'd done anything else being a contributory factor.  James and Wiggy started off and put on fifty for the first wicket before James was caught at point for a brisk 28.

There then followed a record partnership for the club as Wiggy and Sunil put on 207 for the 2nd wicket with both scoring hundreds.  Sunil was the more aggressive of the two (fifty coming off 38 balls and century off 77 balls) and was the first to reach his hundred; moving from 76 to 100 in four scoring shots.

Wiggy was clearly very determined in his innings and bar one or two wild shots played with excellent discipline.  Wiggy's fifty came off 57 balls
and his century from 102 balls. The partnership was only ended when Sunil tried a switch hit and only succeeded in giving a return catch to the excellent Ali.

A total of 269-2 seemed an excellent one but against an unknown batting line up was it going to be enough?  Needless to say for me there were
recollections of a game I captained against Warfield a few years ago (http://www.thealeandtilehurst.co.uk/2004/20040724_1.htm) when James and Cat
both got hundreds and put on over 200 but we lost.  It seemed a good idea to not let that become a habit.

Webb and Palfrey got the Aldermaston innings off to a decent start before Bob extracted some measure of revenge for years of pain being inflicted on
him by clean bowling his osteopath.

Ali then came in to join Webb and started finding the boundary on a regular basis.  Fortunately I was able to dismiss both of them and at 120-3 we seemed to be relatively in control.  However, Whitelock and M Woodley had different ideas and when their partnership went past 100 it looked like they might take Aldermaston to victory.  In fact when they needed 31 off five overs with 7 wickets in hand Aldermaston were favourites.

Fortunately we had an ace up our sleeve, albeit a very young one.  James came back in to the attack and bowled an astonishingly good spell of 3-0-6-1; a spell of bowling that belied his 13 years of age and promises great things for the future.

Wiggy was also bowling a good spell of off spin (2-16 off four with the help of a great catch by Hamad) so that it came down to 15 off the last over.  With the field right back the new Aldermaston batsman couldn't get the early boundary they needed and we ended up winning by 6 runs.

By common consent this was one of the best games we have had on a Sunday for a while; a close finish in a game against a side that play the game
exactly as it should be played.
