Theale & Tilehurst Friendly 1st XI vs Finchampstead 3rd XI

BACK

And if we turn, turn, turn, turn then we might learn, learn to turn

To the pleasure of Steve in particular who was going out for dinner in town straight from the game this match had been moved to Leighton Park School.

Cat won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that looked decent but perhaps didn’t play quite as well as it suggested; the ball never really quite coming on and gripping quite a lot to assist the spinners.

Cat was the first to go when he nicked one to the ‘keeper before two fifty partnerships featuring Steve and Wiggy and then Wiggy and Jamil took T&T to a strong position at 141-2.  What was becoming apparent though was that every time a batsman tried to lift the scoring rate they struggled and perished.

This meant that at the end of the innings the primary objective was to make sure we scored 200 to guarantee 10 batting points; Lemmy reaching this target with a boundary off the first ball of the final over of the innings.

It was the Finchampstead spinners, Brown and Gaffney, that had done the vast majority of the bowling for their team.  However, it was the pace of Lemmy that was to have the next major say in the game.  Ward was bowled in the first over of the Finchampstead reply as he played a very ambitious drive, Biggs was caught behind, Lay was caught at mid off before Jones was bowled behind his legs.

The next wicket to fall had an element of luck and farce about it.  Evans drilled a drive straight back down the ground which Bondy could only get a hand on and in the process deflected it in to Pete’s chest in the umpire’s position.  Evans obviously felt the shot deserved runs so was two-thirds of the way down the pitch; the problem for him being that the ball was now with Cookie at mid off.  A decent throw and some swift glove work completed the run out whilst Bondy and Pete compared injuries and groans.

It was then the turn of the T&T spinners to apply the finishing touches.  The Finchampstead skipper, Arnold, must have realised it wasn’t his day when he was caught behind from a ball he was trying to leave.  A brief flurry from Gaffney was ended when he became the fourth wicket in the day to fall in the over following a drinks break and Bondy turned one past Augustus’ outside edge to bowl him.  The final wicket was a caught and bowled to secure what turned out to be a relatively straightforward victory.

The 1sts therefore finish the 1st half of the season unbeaten and with the very real chance of a second promotion on the trot.

Thanks again go to Pete Moore for umpiring and John Reeves for scoring.
