This was a crucial game for the 1sts as 2nd met 3rd in the table. With the threat of bad weather coming in later there was an atmosphere at the start that suggested we were playing for points in a shortened game. Fortunately Cat backed his cricketing instincts and decided to bowl at the toss assuming that the game would go the full distance.
Cookie struck twice with the new ball; first sending Cronin’s off stump cart wheeling as he left the ball and then trapping Hawkes so palpably lbw that even Pete got his finger out of his pocket.
From the first game the 1sts knew that Knowles is the main player for Hurst and when he was dropped relatively early it seemed like it might be a miss that T&T might regret. Fortunately Bondy was bowling well and with Sunil they worked their way through the Hurst middle order.
When we had them 160-8 it seemed like we might roll them for a relatively low total but a combination of decent batting and not particularly great bowling and fielding let Hurst off the hook a bit. They made it up to 229 all out which seemed an about par score.
Hurst started with the old ball but despite the relatively early loss of Cat T&T made a steady start. A succession of reasonable partnerships followed with the common factor being Wiggy.
As viewers of this web site will know Wiggy has been in very decent form recently and this was the realisation of this. Having got off the mark with a six he brought up his fifty from 60 balls.
However, when Sunil arrived at the crease with 79 still needed and the weather starting to close in there was an awful lot of work to do. Fortunately both batters were up to the task and just as the rain started Wiggy hit Ruddock for four consecutive fours to bring the winning line within sight.
Full credit to Hurst for not looking to sneak away with a draw on the back of the weather and it was appropriate that Wiggy should be on strike when the winning runs came; first hitting a six over long on for six to brings up his first league hundred (from 96 balls) and then watching five wides go down the leg side to complete the game.
Whilst we weren’t at our best in the field this was a very good and well deserved victory for the firsts which has helped open up a gap between us and one of our nearest competitors
Thanks go again to John for scoring and Pete for umpiring.
