Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Twyford and Ruscombe Friendly XI

2nd August 2009

Report by Fingers

This was our first friendly game against Twyford so there was the initial uncertainty on both sides about what to expect.  Nevertheless on winning the toss James chose to bat first.

After some recent poor form Raj managed to get going and he and James put on 76 for the first wicket.  Just as he was looking like going on to another big score James miss-timed one to mid off for a straightforward catch. Another decent partnership followed as Dopey joined Raj.  After Raj went past fifty and just as Dopey was threatening to open up both went in quick succession.  However, Twyford's possible belief that they might now be through the main batting was firmly rejected when Sunil played a superb shot through extra cover for four first ball.  It was one of those moments when a team goes quiet and fears the worst. Former T&T player Adam Smith came on to bowl and probably bowled the best spell of the innings; he got one to bounce a bit extra that Alan gloved to the 'keeper and after some fine shots Sunil top edged a pull and was also taken by the 'keeper.  In a timed game the innings closed after 38 overs with the score on 226-5. This seemed to be at the top end or just over par for the conditions.

Tea: in some ways this deserves its own report.  A new concept of the 3 table tea was introduced: one table full of sandwiches; one table full of pasties, sausage rolls and other savouries and then a third table for the
cakes.  Fortunately both teams were hungry and made serious inroads in to a great tea.  Thanks to Katharine and team.

With tea having taken a bit longer than normal Twyford ended with just under an hour and 20 overs to chase 226.  Woodman and Leach got the Twyford innings off to a steady start before James took another fine slip catch; although he took an even better one later to get Bob his second wicket. In the end the game never quite came to life after tea.  We were always one or two wickets behind where we needed to be to bowl them out and they were always 30 runs behind where they needed to be if they were to launch a serious assault on the T&T score.  H Fort and Smith had a busy partnership of 61 for the fifth wicket and Rob teased the batters with his leg spin picking up a couple of good wickets.

In the end the game ended as a draw and we look forward to seeing Twyford again next year.
