Now we’re at the business end of the season games have that little bit of extra pressure; one slip up would give those chasing the promotion places an opening and make the last few games more exciting than they need to be.
Cat won the toss and elected to field. Lemmy and Weston opened the bowling and after a couple of boundaries in the second over a very tight reign was kept on the C&R scoring. After fifteen overs the scoring rate was only about 1½ an over with Lemmy having dismissed Grimsdale. Things changed when Sunil came in to the attack. In his first over he bowled Maffey and then Bannerjee was bowled behind his legs first ball. However, that was as good as it got for Sunil with the ball as in his next over C&R practically doubled their score.
Lemmy was bowling a marathon spell and seemed keen to try and bowl all the way through the innings. He managed to dismiss the dangerous looking Dewey but after 18 overs his spell finally came to an end, his final over nearly doubling the runs he had conceded. Jibran and Kulkarni were putting together the main partnership of the C&R innings as they doubled the C&R score for the sixth wicket. Just as they looked like they might be able to launch an assault on the final few overs they went in consecutive balls. A couple of late wickets for Crofty meant that C&R were bowled out in the final over available to them for 190.
Having hit a sumptuous boundary off the first ball of the T&T reply Wiggy went early caught at mid wicket. Cat and Crofty then consolidated things with a partnership of 56 before Cat was second out caught at slip. At 101-2 things seemed under control but three quick wickets put C&R right back in the game. Fortunately Sunil was able to play his best st XI innings of the season and in partnerships of 42 and 27 with Andy and Lemmy was able to take us to the brink of victory. With the scores level it was left to Weston to hit a six in to the car park to complete the victory and secure another 20 points. Our fate remains in our own hands.
Thanks go to Doc for fulfilling the umpiring duties this week.
