Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Marlow Park 2nd XI

8th August 2009

BACK

Report by Speedo.

I've had a few weeks off writing 2nd XI reports largely because of the first game against Marlow Park where we had a shocker in the field and dropped a load of chances. I couldn't face the match report as I knew we'd let the win slip through our fingers. Since that match our catching performances have matched the same level as our batting and bowling performances (I mean they've been good). In this game it was Marlows turn to put down some chances early on with Micky the main beneficiary.  We were inserted (but would have batted anyway) on a good looking pitch which had been covered but did show signs of the heavy Friday rain in the centre. Meady and Micky got us off to a steady start with the ball swinging in the air and tennis balling off the centre of the pitch. When both went followed by Jonathan we weren't sure whether we'd reach a competitive total but Agers and Nehal stepped up and started to score freely. Agers in particular cover driving sweetly. Nehal went softly half driving to mid-off and this bought Bondy to the cease in his debut match for the seconds. He started cautiously but quickly joined Agers in scoring freely especially against the younger spin options from Marlow Park. As the inning drew to a close it appeared the declaration would coincide with Agers ton giving me some palpitations. Fortunately (?) Agers scoring rate slowed as he ran out of puff and Bondy started to farm the strike. In the end we declared 4 overs early with Agers 80no. The highlight from the Marlow Park bowling attack had been an excellent marathon 19 over spell from Woodward only mared by an outburst against a Micky wide.

We started with the old ball and kept it tight for the first 5-6 overs. As I considered the new ball options not wanting the batters to get themselves in vs. the old ball the first wicket fell and then wickets started to fall regularly. When they were 4 down with the excellent Coll at the crease we took the new ball with Ram immediately at his nippiest best. He ripped the lower middle order apart assisted by some kamikaze attacking stroke play against excellent control of line and length. When Woodward joined Coll it changed for a while with Woodward digging in and leaving the ball well and Coll farming the strike. However the pressure on Coll finally told with the returning Rags picking up his wicket played on. The number 11 came out practicing like he wouldn't last long and Rags duelled for a 5 wicket haul with the tiring Ram. After a couple more overs Ram looked like he was finished but managed to pick up the fifth wicket will the last over of his 10 over spell.

Excellent all around performance with top performances from batsmen, bowlers and fielders. If the matches stay like this I'll write a few more reports. And we're back on top of the division with the title and promotion in our own hands.
