Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Finchampstead 4th XI

We turned up early and viewed the square which didn't seem to have the usual beautifully marked out pitch. I called Fingers and we worked out that the U13 vs. dads match had used the wrong pitch the night before. So Rags and I remarked the front crease and we got on with it.

We were inserted and gathered runs at a reasonable pace against a youthful opening attack. The change bowlers offered a tougher challenge but both openers raised their fifties with strong cover driving from Micky and pulling from Meady. The biggest scare of the opening partnership came after an hour or so when an almighty scream came from the nets. Everyone turned immediately to see the son of one of our opponents holding a broken forearm. The game paused for sometime while Agers administered first aid and we waited for the ambulance. We resumed and Meady fell pulling the wrong ball after a ton opening partnership. Micky followed cutting and Agers quickly got into his stride. After such a solid start we struggled to build a commanding total with the pitch offering a little to the accurate bowling of Simonite. Wickets tumbled but Ram managed some lusty blows to bring us to a total where I could declare.

Fabulous tea provided by Mrs Ager. The chocolate brownies were generally accepted to be the highlight.

We opened with the old ball and kept it tight but failed to make the early breakthrough with a couple of chances going begging. Ram took the first wicket with the new ball having Simonite caught strangled down the leg side and he worked the Finch skipper hard but couldn't claim his wicket. Bondy had a huge appeal turned down with the batman padding up but Rags was luckier with the same umpire a little later. Rags then claimed another wicket with a cracking catch from Os at gully but time was running out. The game rather fizzled out and although they only had ten (due to the earlier breakage in the nets) we never really looked like taking the 9 wickets we needed nor did they look like getting near our total.
