Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Kew 4th XI

22nd August 2009

BACK

Report by Speedo.

It was a long trip this week and all 13 of us turned up pretty early - we impressively had a scorer and an umpire this week. Most of the early chat was how good the wicket looked after we realised which of those marked out was ours for the game. We lost the toss and they decided to bat. Immediately we realised that the wicket had some spite with cutters gripping and bouncing to cause batsmen difficulties. James took the first wicket during his excellent opening spell caught low by Bondy at cover. Ram kept the other end tight and when Rags came on he continued his excellent form and ripped out the middle order in a few short overs. The opener Ashton who looked limited was tied down but crucially he kept his wicket so when he was joined by the South African Bishop they started a fight back slowly at first but gradually gaining momentum. The game changed from looking like we'd bowl them out for under 125 to one where they looked capable of 175+. After Rags finally removed the opener Ram returned as the scoring rate started to climb. Some leg side hitting at the end bought the score to higher than anyone had expected and a useful total on a tricky pitch.

Rog was sent to the top of the order and scored quickly in the early stages to give us a good start. Micky found the conditions difficult and although he kept his wicket until past the 20th over it was obvious that he wasn't happy. Rog was out pulling caught at square leg and Agers went when looking in excellent free scoring form with the bowler hanging onto a screamer.  When Micky was out 'frustrated' and Hammad was caught deceived by a very slow long hop we were left with about 50 needed off 12 overs with Lakeish and Meady at the cease.  They were bowling pretty well and the pitch was difficult for new batsmen to get used to so 4 an over was no walk in the park.  However Meady enjoyed the extra bounce and the introduction of a little pace from the bowling meant that runs were soon flowing and we ran out winners with 4 overs left.

Well done again to everyone in the team with all members contributing with bat, ball and catches.
