Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Wokingham Oaks and Acorns XI

23rd August 2009

BACK

Report by Speedo.

We arrived to blazing sunshine and an oval-esque pitch (that means very dry - if you're reading this in a few years time you probably won't remember the 5th Ashes Test at the Oval in 2009).

Slightly surprisingly O&A chose to bat after stating they had a very weak side. Mikey opened up with Sunny who was sporting a catching Michael Jackson like glove to protect his injured (later found out to be broken) left pinky. Sunny bowled with his usual pace and vigour and hence took the first wicket with a flighted yorker! Mickey appeared to follow up with the wicket of the other opener but Meady signalled for an ' over waist high' full toss no ball which the umpire agreed with tocall back the batsman. To be honest it was a tricky call as Mikeys was a slower ball and I'm not sure what the rule is, as spinner can get away with higher full tosses, but with their declaration of being weak and my hope to have a decent run chase it was an easier call (sorry Mikey). Rags replaced Sunny and Harry replaced Mikey, and after a wicket from Rags there followed a period of non-text book batting with one player strongest through wide mid-on and the other willing to club thru' the off side.   Rags finally broken the stand bowling the later batsman and soon after Dicko had the opener caught off another highish (but legal) full toss. New batsmen appeared and went regularly and the run rate increased with some more attacking stroke play. The final (9th) wicket went with Mikey bowling their young lady number 10 with a tricky to play full toss.

After tea they continued with the same ball and opened with slow left arm from one end and the young lady from the other. Most of the centre wicket chat was about Hammads desire not to get out to 'a girl'. The lack of pace on the ball meant that although both opener accumulated runs without too many alarms the run rate was modest. The introduction of pace changed the game and both Hammad and Harry went to cunning full straight balls. Meady continued to accumulate and, after Rog went playing inside an off-cutter, he was joined by Sunny minus his Jacko glove. Sunny was obviously in pain everytime he hit the ball and it eventually told as he called Meady thru' for a suicidal single - well it was suicidal for him once Meady rightly (I'm writing this so I say it was right!) sent him back. Enter Arsalan who immediately upped the heat in the game with comments to the opposition. He'd obviously read the same non-text book batting technique as we'd seen
earlier and struggled to get the ball away. Strong driving from Meady and some clips to leg from Arsalan bought the scores level. Arsalan thought he'd finish of winding up the oppo with a cheeky single straight to cover. He call yes and got half way down before sending Meady a dummy. Meady continued foolishly and was about 2 yards short when the good throw was gathered by the keeper. Meady took it all in good spirits (but I've filed it away with all the times Micky has run me out.) In the end the chase was fairly comfortable built on good bowling on a pretty flat track.
