Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Chiswick & Latymer Friendly XI

Match Report by Wiggy.

Although it was 7 months since the last time we had played at Theale it felt like little had changed for the first game of the new season. Despite being on the team sheet for the home game Den arrived at Theale nice and early expecting to be picked up for the away fixture and I was convincedthat we were playing Mortimer West End. Fortunately some of the team knew what was going on and things soon got underway smoothly.

At the toss we agreed that he would rather bowl and I would rather bat, however he was keen to have the toss regardless.  I called heads, lost, but we ended up batting anyway.

The innings got underway as Matt and I set about nullifying the Chiswick attack. I was very lucky not to record a 3rd ball duck for my first game in charge but fortunately Knowles dropped a sitter off his own bowling and we were soon underway. The pitch was playing very well for an April wicket (well done to Brian and Phil for all their hard work on the square) as we put on 43 for the first wicket. Matt had been batting serenely up until this point but a rush of blood saw him depart for 10, and I left for 39 going back to one which I should have gone forward to. Fortunately at this point Sunil arrived to play the key knock of our innings. From the start it was clear that he was struggling to time the ball as he would have liked, as the accurate spin of Aggot and Carr looked to tie us down, but he showed impressive determination to finish on a very well made 72. James W provided very able support and the pair put on 81 for the 4th wicket which took us most of the way to a  respectable 190 of our 45 overs.

Cooky and Jamil took the new ball with Jamil immediately showing good pace and hitting a tidy line and length. The Chiswick openers were not playing many shots and proved difficult to shift, but Cooky who seemed to get better and better the longer his spell went on got the first breakthrough and finished with 2-17. After the slow start Chiswick remained behind the rate for most of their innings as we made steady progress through their order. Imran was the pick of the bowlers, mixing it up nicely for 3-31 off his 9, as Chiswick were bowled out still 48 runs short of our total.

Thanks to Chiswick for a very enjoyable game played in a good spirit, and Brian for a lovely tea.
