Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Holyport Friendly XI

On what will probably be one of the nicest days to play cricket this year we welcomed Holyport in what has become our traditional Sunday season opener.

Holyport won the toss and elected to bat and despite Michael struggling with his line in his first over the Holyport innings got off to a slow start. Price and Price did manage an opening partnership of 44 before Osman made the first breakthrough with Arsalan taking the catch at square leg. The fall of the first wicket started something of a collapse as Osman soon dismissed the other Price with a very clever slower ball. Slower bowling did to some extent seem to be the way ahead and Harry and I took the next three wickets in quick succession to leave Holyport on 53-5 and looking like they would struggle to set a competitive target. However, Homer with some lusty blows and Morgan with perhaps some more classical shots pushed the total past three figures and on a pitch where timing the ball was difficult and the outfield was slow that did make a game of it. Michael picked up a couple of wickets in his second spell and it was left to the returning Sunil to take the last wicket. Perhaps the least said about the extras we conceded the better.

James and Charlie opened up the T&T reply and put on 31 before Charlie was the first to go bowled. A decent partnership between James and Dopey and another between Osman and Meady took us to the verge of what looked like it would be a comfortable 7 wicket victory. A couple of late wickets perhaps made the result look closer than it was and it was left to Sunil to hit the winning boundary. This was a good start to the season against a strong club and plenty of people had a chance to get some useful overs under their belt or time in the middle. Thanks to James as well for umpiring the match.
