Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Purley 1 Friendly XI

24th April 2010

Match Report by Wiggy.

We went over to Purley this year with a strong team hopeful that we could end a recent run of poor results against them. Purley won the toss on what looked like a good batting pitch and decided to bat. Cooky and Ram opened up for us with the ball and soon found their lines, with Cooky especially seeming to be in a very nice rhythm as Purley struggled to get away from us. One early chance squirted off the outside edge only to fall just short of Sunil at point. Ram soon removed Pat, who we know from past experience to be the Purley danger man, in a very unorthodox fashion as he tried to smash a short leg side delivery onto the Social Club roof only to hit his own knee with the ball and had to retire hurt.

Cooky and Ram soon both picked up wickets as we restricted Purley to 39 for 3 after 12 overs and needing to get going to post a defendable score. At this point Paul Rieber and Chris Rackley came together to build a big partnership. Ash had his first bowl for the club, mixing up his legspin with nicely flighted off beaks. He bowled well and was unlucky not to get the breakthrough. At the halfway point Purley were still behind where they would have probably liked to be and had to be very aggressive in the last 12 overs to get to a defendable total. We were not as disciplined in our lines as we would have liked during this period but generally stuck to our task well and were set 207 to win off 40 overs.

Our reply got off to the worst possible start as I was run out for 0 off the second ball of the match. After this however the team batted very well for the rest of the chase. Croft and James put on 94 for the second wicket with them both being harsh on anything which was too short or wide. Crofty looked imperious as he moved past 50 shortly before James was dismissed for 38. Jamil then came in to join Crofty and made batting look very easy as they knocked off the remaining runs. With 9 needed Crofty went to his hundred with a boundary over cover and then next ball finished the match with a six over the sightscreen. This really was a very classy hundred from Crofty and set a high benchmark for the rest of the season. Overall this was a very satisfying win and hopefully will set us up well for the season.
