Report by Fingers.

This was our final warm up game before the league season starts next week. With the game being against a team in our division it would be a good barometer for how ready we are. Wiggy won the toss and elected to bat.  James went early when he mistimed one to mid off and then Crofty managed to look in good touch in scoring a lucky 18; lucky in that he was twice caught off no balls. When Crofty went the main partnership of the innings was played out by Wiggy and Jamil.  They put on 143 for the third wicket as the Yateley change seam bowlers struggled to find their line and length. Wiggy went on to score a fine hundred and Jamil a good fifty and it was the delayed introduction of the Yateley spinners that changed the game; Piennar dismissing both of the set batsmen.  With only a few overs left it was an awkward situation for the new batters, they had to get on with it without really having time to play themselves in.  As such wickets fell regularly and the innings petered out to 235-9; fewer than we should have got from the position we were in.

After tea we took to the field in what turned out to be rain that for a long time never really started but was always in the air. Jon struck twice in quick succession, Harris going to an excellent slip catch taken by James.  Chris then joined in on the act with the wickets of
Shafi and the aggressive Jemelda.  The Yateley innings was one that kept both teams interested throughout.  The scoring was generally up with the rate but enough wickets were falling to keep us in the hunt as well. The turning point of the second innings was the return of Jon to the attack.  From his first ball a chance went down at mid-off and from his second a catch went down behind the stumps.  That would have made it 8 down with quite a way to go but unfortunately it let Yateley get a lot closer before the final pair were at the wicket together.

With the rain getting heavier and the light going Yateley scored the winning runs from the penultimate ball of the match.  Whilst it was disappointing to lose this game it was certainly good preparation for the league and shows us that we have good players in form.
