Theale & Tilehurst 1st  XI vs Bagshot 1st XI

8th May 2010

BACK

Report by Wiggy.

We were up against Bagshot 1sts for the first league game of the season, in a match which was always going to be a stern test of how far we have come, as they were unlucky to come down from division 2 last year, and were in division one the year before that. Walking out for the toss knowing this on a very overcast day I understood that it was probably a good toss to win. Unfortunately I lost and predictably we were put into bat.

James and I opened up and both had our share of luck against some good bowling as we put on 44 for the first wicket. Sutherland was bowling especially well swinging the ball away from the bat at decent pace while Pettet kept the pressure up maintaining a steady line at the other end. Jamil, Sunil and Osman all managed to get themselves in on a tricky pitch in the middle overs, with Sunil especially showing good fight, but all fell just when they were looking well set.  Ash on league debut for T&T played an attractive cameo, which promises well for the future, however no one could go on to make the 50 plus score we needed to be competitive on the day. In tough conditions it was impressive that the team batted through the 52 overs which was a real positive as we perhaps may not have done so in similar circumstances a few years ago.

Defending 154 was always going to be difficult despite the pitch offering assistance, and in truth we could have done with another 40 runs which would have made things a lot more interesting. We were unlucky early on as edges seemed to always go into gaps rather than to hand, and runs came quite easily to the Bagshot top order. Bagshot seemed to be cruising when the spinners were introduced, and despite both going for runs in their first over, both Ash and Brian bowled well and put a lot of pressure on the batters. Ash was the pick of the T&T bowlers and picked up 3 wickets including a move which was either genius or pure luck, as he sent Sunil to the deep midwicket boundary for the last ball of an over, and then bowled a tempting half tracker which the batsman hit obligingly in the cow corner direction. A few of us lost our houses in the next few seconds as Sunny took an amazing full length diving catch a foot off the floor to complete the three card trick.

The team fought very hard right to the end and at no point was it easy for Bagshot to get the runs but eventually the made it home with 8 overs to spare. Heads never went down and I was very proud of everyone’s efforts, and despite losing I think we showed a lot of qualities which mean we will have a good chance in the league this year.
