Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs MWE 1 Friendly XI

Outsiders come with late run

My reaction on winning the toss was perhaps unusual; it's an anagram of sloblock. My cricketing instincts said bat first but did we have enough batting to justify that decision? I eventually said “we'll bat” with some reluctance. when James and Charlie both went in the 4 over I wanted to say that I'd changed my mind. At 74-7 with Kingston and Audsley both bowling well it looked like it might be a short afternoon. It was time to try and justify the decision I had made. I have had the good fortune this year to have been lent/given a decent bat compared to the one I have had for ages, is older than half the team and is perhaps only suited to blocking games out for a draw. It was also time to put that to good use. The first priority for James and me was to staunch the flow of wickets and try and bat out all the overs. We managed that as we put on 39 in 14 overs to lend the score and the amount of time we had batted some credibility. when Kingston returned to the attack wickets started to flow again until I was last out with the score on 142; that delivery was suspiciously high though wasn't it? With 142 on the board we had half a chance if we could take early wickets. I remember some years ago Keep being surprised first ball by a booming Micky in-swinger and being bowled. This time he was surprised in the first over by the strength of Jordan's throwing arm and was run out by a considerable distance.

When Tom Mackenzie also went early to the Manning “we are family” combination we knew we were right in the game. In his final over Jordan bowled Filmer and Raj dismissed Prinn lbw to put us in a good position with MWE 31-4. However, having dominated early proceedings the MWE opening bowlers were now batting together and it seemed that the fate of the game again rested in their hands. Fortunately the dangerous Kingston went quickly well taken by Hammad from a skier at point. Audsley though was striking the ball cleanly and keeping MWE in the hunt. Mikey repeated Jordan's trick of taking a wicket in his final over, well taken by James down the leg side, and the game remained in the balance. The turning point came when Rob finally won his ongoing dual with Audsley when Aygzz took another good catch in the deep at mid wicket; for the first time we were favourites. Rob mopped up the tail to finish what had been an excellent bowling spell with 4-34 and we ended up winning a game we had been second favourites in for most of the afternoon by 17 runs.

Thanks to Phil and Dopey for their umpiring stints and to Joyce for doing the teas.
