Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Thatcham 3th XI

Micky lost the toss and we were put in to bat. This was no bad thing as the pitch didn't look too solid and the number of pitch marks in it by the end confirmed that suspicion.

Micky drove the first ball of the match through the covers for four but that was something of a false dawn as the innings got off to a relatively slow start. After 20 overs we were 55-2 with Micky and Aygzz both going to the impressive Taylor. Ed and Crofty were in the middle of a rebuilding partnership that was broken in the final over before drinks when Ed went bowled by Stevenson.

Crofty went past fifty and was looking in good form and it was something of a surprise when he went caught at slip off the bowling of the cheery Bloor. With Raj following straightaway we were 111-5 and looking in a bit of trouble. Hammad and Ram had the second rebuilding partnership of the innings and took the score to 180 before another flurry of wickets. It was left to me and Tim to get the score past 200 which looked competitive on a pitch that was offering help to all the bowlers.

The Thatcham innings started in similar style to ours, a couple of early boundaries before the brake was applied. Doc took the first wicket when Stevenson chipped to mid on and Ram soon clean bowled Coydenn.

After that wickets fell at regular intervals and when the seventh wicket fell in the 31st over we looked in a strong position. However, the Thatcham lower order gamely stuck to their task of playing out for the draw and made taking the last three wickets hard work.

Liversidge finally went when he didn't pick Doc's slower ball and Holland went caught at silly point in the 46th over. We had 15 balls to get the last wicket. Taylor had looked a very good number ten so we were pleased to be bowling the last over at Ansell. The first four balls went by with few alarms for the batsman until Doc summoned up an off stump yorker to seal the win with one ball to spare. A much needed win and 25 points.
