With a team a little light on batting on winning the toss I didn’t have too much hesitation in choosing to bowl first. Although as Hungerford wanted to bat first the toss had been an academic exercise.
Mike and James opened the bowling and soon had the early Hungerford batsmen in trouble. Mike was swinging the ball prodigiously and cleaned up Gailbraith and Willoughby; in between James had bowled Ponsford.
This brought Thorp and Wallis to the crease and they had the partnership that defined the game. Both played well and hit the ball hard and after a relatively slow start the scoring rate lifted dramatically. The turning point came when Wallis was well taken by James standing up to the stumps from the bowling of Alec. The only thing was that Wallis was the only person that knew he had edged it, there was no appeal and as he started walking off James seemed to think he must have over balanced and stumped his as well. It was a fine piece of sportsmanship from the Hungerford captain.
The next wicket to fall featured something equally fine as Mike took an outstanding diving catch at point to dismiss Thorp. With the two main contributors gone the rest of the innings was something of a procession.
You know that bowlers often get told when they bowl well but take no wickets “you’ll bowl worse than that and take four”. Well, today was the day that Bobby bowled worse and took four. And yes that is sour grapes on my behalf for how it’s been going for me this season.
187 all out represented a decent effort by us in the field but we would need to bat well to get close. At 62-1 we looked like we were doing okay but the introduction of the young Miller in to the attack changed everything and quickly. His main asset was his dip which meant that several T&T players seemed to find it very difficult to judge the length of his bowling.
A succession of players returned not quite sure either what they or the bowler (or both) had done that led to them being out.
The innings fell away quickly for us to finish 94 all out.
Not a great effort with the bat.
