Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs binfield Friendly XI

Report by Fingers

At the toss Binfield skipper Ian Goddard told me that on the same pitch the day before two poor sides had scored over 450 runs; what that makes us having only just managed 400 between us I don’t know.  Whatever it says it wasn’t anything about the pitch which was an excellent one to play cricket on. On winning the toss with some hesitation I elected to bat.  With equal hesitation I asked Arsalan to strap on his pads to open the batting.  Fortunately both were decisions that paid off.

Arsalan scored a good 44 in an opening partnership with Hammad of 99 which set a good platform for us.  Unfortunately we didn’t kick on quite as we would have hoped.  Dennis’ nightmare season continued with him being run out without facing a ball and Osman followed not long after for 14. Debutant Stuart made his way to the crease and scored a breezy 20 but it was left to Hammad to hold the innings together.  His scoring rate may have been a little slow to start with but once had had past fifty he opened up and played some very good shots. The oddest moment of the innings came when Sykes returned to the attack.  Sykes was comfortably the quickest of the Binfield bowlers and there was perhaps not too much surprise when Hammad asked for his helmet to be brought out, the surprising thing was that he asked for it to be brought out at the end of the over. It became clear why he had asked for it when after donning it a range of Dilshan scoops and reverse sweeps off bowlers of all paces were attempted.  There was mixed success but one reverse sweep from the bowling of Sykes was superb.  There was a late flurry of late wickets before tea as we tried to add quick runs and we finished on 225-9 declared; a decent total but on a very good surface one that was no more than par.

Mike and Bob opened the bowling and we should have taken a wicket in the first over but I dropped Browning at slip off Mike; mind you it was a tougher chance than the one Mike dropped off my bowling later. Browning and Edgington got the Binfield innings off to a good start with Edgington in particular hitting the ball powerfully.  It was something of a surprise when he holed out to Osman off Bob at deep mid off. A second good partnership developed between Browning and the young Collett but during this we were able to slow the scoring rate.  Browning was the next to go when he top edged a pull for Tim to take the catch and give Stuart his first wicket.  In the same over Goddard became the second player on the day to be run out without facing a ball as Osman hit the stumps direct from short fine leg. Khanna soon followed palpably lbw to Stuart and when Alan-Canty went cheaply we looked in a strong position.  There was a late attempt to go after the runs by Ennis but when he became the second direct hit run out victim for Osman and Osman bowled Collett with a superb slower ball we were nearly there.

The final touches were added by James taking another sharp stumping and then Osman deservedly taking the final wicket as I redeemed myself at slip.  All in all it was a very good afternoon’s cricket.
