Theale & Tilehurst Friendly  XI vs Shinfield Friendly XI

20th June 2010

BACK

Report by Fingers.

In a change to the advertised programme we were playing Shinfield on another perfect Sunday afternoon for cricket.  After protracted negotiations on the format to be played we settled on a 90 over match and the coin was sent in to the air.  Shinfield captain Tony Gaylor called tails; his reaction to seeing heads was to proclaim that he hadn’t won a toss for 2½ years.  As I wasn’t entirely sure what to do, because I’ve always wanted to and with an element of generosity I said “you choose”.  He elected to bowl.

Paul and Charlie opened the batting and got us off to a steady start.  At the first drinks interval at 15 overs we were 58-0 and the talk was about doing the same again in the next 15 overs and then being able to attack the last overs.

What did aid the lifting of the scoring rate after drinks was Charlie’s radical decision to use a cricket bat rather than the plank of wood he had been using.  As Paul also tried to lift the rate he was caught at mid off and Osman came out to join Charlie. Having been refereeing at the Theale Tigers six-a-side tournament all day Saturday and playing in it Sunday morning Charlie was delighted at the prospect of having to run between the wickets with Osman.

Charlie marked the anniversary of his first senior fifty by scoring another and it was something of a surprise when he was dismissed for a personal best of 71.

By this stage the youthful Farrow had entered the attack and showed a bit of pace; it was perhaps a surprise he hadn’t been given the new ball.  Unfortunately after four overs he pulled up lame and had to retire from the attack.

Without ever being at his best Osman was moving the score along nicely with the help of Spike as he carries on his own decent run of form.

In the last few overs of the innings the run rate lifted and it became a question of whether Osman would be able to reach three figures or not.  Going in to the last over he was 88no and on strike.  Things looked good when the first and third balls of the over went for four; four needed from 3 balls.  Two dot balls followed so it came down to the last ball needing to go to the boundary; a mistimed shot to mid wicket got two runs to leave Osman on a personal best of 98no.  I’m sure that first hundred isn’t too far away though.

After tea it was Osman and Adam that opened the bowling.  Madgewick and Rich started reasonably for Shinfield until Osman bowled Madgewick with his well disguised slower ball.  Jack Gaylor followed in Osman’s next over well taken by Rob from a skier at mid on and then Adam took his first wicket for the club when Rich nicked one behind to James.

When Tony Gaylor followed to another Osman slower ball the Shinfield innings was in danger of collapsing very quickly.  After four wickets Osman retired from the attack and Bobby came on and bowled a good spell during which he was unlucky not to take a wicket.

After Adam had taken his second wicket and completed an impressive debut spell Rob came on and again showed what a fine bowler he has the potential to be.  His first wicket was a James stumping (how many times will we see that combined dismissal over the years?) and then he took a sharp caught and bowled to dismiss Aust.

Osman showed he is human by missing a couple of straightforward catches towards the end.  However, it was fitting that for the second week running he was involved in the final wicket albeit this week the roles were reversed with him the catcher and me the bowler.
