Theale & Tilehurst Friendly  XI vs ICL Bracknell Friendly XI

22nd August 2010

Report by Fingers.

After the disappointments of Saturday there was a need for a positive feeling to be generated for this game; I thought that the best way to do this was to have a Glee soundtrack for the journey to the game (pun intended).  I'm not sure that this was appreciated by all in the car but you don't always get things any way you want it.

This was a change to the advertised programme with our old friends from ICL Bracknell taking the place of Bradfield.  Simon Humphries won the toss for ICL Bracknell and after extensive consultation with his team mates decided that they would bat first.

Sharpy bowled a very impressive spell first up but was without luck.  Scott did manage to pick up a couple of wickets in his opening spell and Alec and Harry also picked up wickets but ICL were relatively well placed at 101-4 from 25 overs.

Haines and Humphries then had the main partnership of the ICL innings as they put on 83 in brisk time for the 5th wicket.  Both played well, defending the good balls and when they looked to attack both hit the ball cleanly.  Both survived chances in the deep which if we had taken would have restricted the score but at the end of the innings 220-8 from 44 overs represented a good Sunday score; a challenging total but one that was within reach batting second.

James and Arsalan opened the T&T reply and got us off to a good start but then ICL started squeezing in the field to restrict the scoring rate. Arsalan was the first to go well taken by Dolton at slip; the next ball was perhaps the turning point of the match.  To his first ball Sharpy chipped a straightforward catch to mid off but the chance went down.  Initially Sharpy wasn't at his most fluent but in partnership with Phil the score really started to move.  Meady was the first to his fifty, from just 27 balls, but was then dismissed when we were in touching distance of winning. Sharpy, loving the opportunity to bat higher up the order, followed to fifty after Meady was dismissed and then dominated the scoring to the end of the innings; this was through a combination of good stroke play and even better counting.

In the end we ran out relatively comfortable winners by 6 wickets with five overs to spare; this was despite at one point it looking like we were slipping too far behind the rate and it would be a tough run chase. It just goes to prove the old adage: don't stop believing.
