Theale & Tilehurst Friendly  XI vs Wembley Friendly XI

24th April 2011

Report by Speedo.

For the long trip to Wembley I'd checked the location on their website and tapped the postcode into my sat nav. We arrived in good time at the Vale Farm sports centre and asked if we were at Wembley CC. No - go out and turn right and right again. So off to pitch two - we arrived at Unite CC - No not Wembley - go out a turn right and right again. So we arrived at pitch three - North Wembley - No not Wembley - go out a turn left and left. So back at United CC we consulted the interweb and went right and right again pass North Wembley to Wembley CC - ground 4.

They batted first in a timed game and the tennis ball bounce made scoring tricky to pitched up bowling but very easy to anything short. SsssStroudie got us off and running when Meady stumped the opener with a rebound from his pads. Aman managed to get the other opener caught and bowled chasing one that would have been a wide. Aman came out of the attack due to slow over rate and the skipper worrying about beling fined half his match fee. Bobby swung the ball and picked up a couple more wickets. Alec bowled a tight first spell but it was Rob who got into them in terms of wickets. Alec came back at the other end and was even harder to score off. The highlight of the fielding was senior deputy vice under coach Ager coming in full pelt to take a low catch at point.

They batted on slightly longer than we expected and with Alec and Rob rescuing the early slow over rate we got though 48 overs in about 2 hours 45 mins.

BaaarStroudie and Agers opened up to good effect with Agers counting very effectively. The stand of 60 odd in 12 overs set an ideal base. Of course as I was predicting on the boundary it would be the slow bowling that would decide the game - BaaarStoudie went well caught to the quickest of their bowlers! Agers went passed 50 but at the other end no-one could stay with him until Aman and at 134 for 4 we looked well placed. But Aman, Bobby and Agers fell in quick succession but not before Agers had posted an excellent ton - 101 out of a team score of 138. He started with some trademark drives and finished with some big slog-sweep sixes plus he ran excellently in between. I was proved right when it was Murphy their slow (straight) bowler who picked up a 6-for.

So Arsenalesque defeat at Wembley - oh well it was a good run. 4 cricket grounds and a football stadium and we're still waiting for Sunny to finish his shot......
