Theale & Tilehurst friendly XI vs RUASCC friendly XI

22nd May 2011

Report by Fingers.

In homage to this week’s Glee special where they focused on the classic album Rumours by Fleetwood Mac I will attempt to write a match report that features all the song titles from the album.  Get ready for some for some rather tortured prose.  On a musical criticism note I thought that Rachel’s version of “Go Your Own Way” was as good as the version of “Don’t Stop” was bad. And I thought the version of Don’t Stop was very bad.

On winning the toss there was some difference of opinion on what I should do (there wasn’t really but I want to get one of the song titles in early).  So I thought “Go Your Own Way” and therefore I elected to bat first. Wiggy and James opened the batting for T&T and it would be “Second Hand News” to report that it was Wiggy that got off to the more fluent start.  I think it would be fair to say that James only has “Dreams” of timing the ball as well as Wiggy can (not doing too badly that’s two song titles in the one paragraph).

James was the first to go and Harry was not long in following.  That made it two quick wickets and from the way that Wiggy and Hammad batted they were obviously determined to make sure that these wickets didn’t form part of “The Chain” that led to the T&T batting order falling away quickly. Wiggy and Hammed put on 152 for the 3rd wicket and were perhaps thinking “Don’t Stop” until they broke the 3rd wicket partnership record for the club.  They fell some way short when Hammad walked when he was out LBW to Bruce Main. Wiggy reached his 10th career hundred and 8th for T&T in what was a hard worked innings.  With time running out Wiggy decided it was time to take the bowling on and when he went down the pitch to Zia he decided he was “Never Going Back Again” and was out stumped by some margin.

At tea we thought a total of 219-4 was a decent total but perhaps 51 runs in the last ten overs with wickets in hand wasn’t as aggressive as we needed to have been.
[Looking at the song titles left there’s going to need to be some creative writing in the second half of this report!]

Michael and James opened the bowling for T&T and both took wickets in their opening spells.  James clean bowled Carpenter who must have been thinking “Oh Daddy” as he went back to a ball he should have gone forward to. Andy Eagle soon followed as he edged the ball in the direction of second slip; as the ball left the bat he must have thought “I Don’t Want to Know” but he soon did know his fate as Harry duly accepted the chance.

Zia came in and from the off was timing the ball as sweetly as a “Songbird” sings.  Whilst he gave some chances he also found the boundary on a regular basis and in reality we were never able to apply pressure on a sustained basis. [mmm.. two song titles left and this is looking difficult to say the least]
The partnership between Zia and Ward continued to grow and unfortunately we were unable to make any of the difficult chances stick or put on any scoreboard pressure as runs continued to flow at a fluent rate.

In the end RUASCC ran out comfortable and deserved winners by 8 wickets.

And if anyone knows how to get “You Make Loving Fun” and “Gold Dust Woman” in to a match report you’re a better person than me.
