Theale & Tilehurst 2nd  XI vs British Airways 3rd XI

28th May 2011

Report by Mikey.

First match report so don’t expect it to be great.

Due to traffic problems from the motorway to the Ground, not only did we have 6 players short at 1 pm, British Airways were also struggling. With the wicket also being damp due to the overnight and early rain we agreed that the start would be delayed. The game eventually started at just after 1:40 and was reduced to 90 overs. The summer weather had disappeared for the day leaving windy, cloudy conditions prevailing, with the threat of rain in the air.

Meady won the toss and decided that we would bowl first. Doc and Naz opened the attack and with some very tidy and tight bowling keeping the BA run rate down. It was the change of bowling which got the breakthrough, Ram came on and the batsman chipped one up to Meady for a nice simple catch. The next wicket fell to Michael with the batsman hitting one high in the air for Doc to take a straightforward catch. It was Kiani and Khalid who got the innings really going with quick singles and boundary’s when the bad ball was bowled.  Naz bowled a very good second spell keeping it tight again, eventually making the breakthrough. Brian then took a couple of wickets which included a sharp stumping from James, and an even sharper catch from Naz in close. Naz then picked up 2 more wickets with good bowling.  Meady decided to bring back Doc, who finished off what was a good bowling and fielding display. BA finishing on 176 for 8.

Tea was taken which in the first instance smelled like a bbq!! But then turned out to be good old sandwiches and fruit, healthy, but as James proved to us not very filling, as he was asking for money to buy some more food!!! It was during tea that Brian asked me to do the match report.

We opened with Arsalan and Meady who got off to a good steady start ticking the scoring over, which included some nice shots from Meady. The beginning of the innings started with probably the worst of the days weather  - low cloud and rain, we couldn’t even see the planes going past which for many of us was something exciting to do whilst sat in a small score box!! The breakthrough then came slowing the run rate down, it brought Paul to the crease which was short and sweet then Dennis came to the crease, but unfortunately didn’t last long. We were hoping that Meady would stay in throughout the innings, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. With Micky and Michael at the crease we were hoping for the same as last week, but it wasn’t to be as Micky who edged one to gully. Michael was looking steady with Ram at the other end however Ram went quickly, getting bowled by the bowler of the day Nothey who also finished with 5 for 45 of 13. Doc then comes to the crease to see out the innings which included two scoring shots which were a six and a four. Brian came out and it looked like Michael and Brian would see the innings out BUT Paul gave Michael out LBW(?). Not Paul’s finest moment umpiring but as last week twice being given LBW for duck there was a possibility that he would give it. Next week mate!!

In the end it was a well deserved draw in difficult conditions, we batted well at the end with Michael and Meady being the pick, James and Brian seeing it through to the end. Naz being the pick of the bowler’s for us.

Still unbeaten and let’s hope it stays that way all season lads! :-D

It was then left to a hasty retreat by all back down the M4.
