Theale & Tilehurst 2nd  XI vs NPL Teddington 2nd XI

11th June 2011

Report by Fingers.

The longish trip to Teddington seemed to have led to people being in very good humour for some reason as before the game started all seemed to be in high spirits.

Meady lost the toss and we were put in to bat.  We got off to a steady start before Aygzz played on trying to leave the ball for 15.  In discussions on the sidelines after Dougie said to Aygzz that he looked like he’d been in two minds.  Aygzz denied this saying that when he leaves the ball he likes to have the bat close so he can play it if he needs to.  Following this somewhat bizarre statement both claimed victory in the argument. The settling came later when the first thing Meady said after his dismissal was: “You looked like you were in two minds there Aygzz.” 1-0 to Dougie.

Crofty joined Meady at the crease and was able to stroke a long half volley to the cover boundary first ball.  Having put on 90 for the second wicket it was appropriate for the Naval man to be out with the score on Nelson.  Crofty’s dismissal also created some conversation with him caught at long off.  In typically bullish fashion Crofty said that he’d only been looking to push the ball for one and if he’d really tried to hit it he’d have cleared the fielder by miles.

With Crofty out our chances of pushing on quickly to a big score diminished and it was hard work for Meady and Mikey to keep the score moving.  Boundaries were few and far between but the running between the wickets was good.  Once Meady had reached fifty he did accelerate but this was in terms of the twos and threes becoming more frequent.  Meady played very well for his 92 but the nature of the innings is shown by there being only seven boundaries whilst there were over 20 twos or threes.

Doc was promoted up the order for some quick runs and hit an early four; Meady wasn’t helped by this being an all run four.  There was a flurry of late wickets and it was left to Nehal to make a useful 32no to ensure that we got up to a decent score of 227-7.

We started with a brief experiment with the old ball but soon the option of the new ball was taken and given to Doc and Ram.  Doc got the first breakthrough when he bowled Sharma but he was soon quite literally hit out of the attack.  Gardiner hit a very firm drive straight back to Doc which hit him just below the knee.  Doc tried to carry on but was forced to hobble from the field.

Naz took over and soon took the wicket of Hatch caught at mid on by Crofty.  With the game developing nicely and NPL Teddington on about 70-2 from 20 overs the rain came over and we were forced from the field.  At times the rain looked like it would relent but then it would come back heavier again.  After just under an hour the rain did clear and we were able to retake the field.  Gardiner was soon caught in the gully and then the dangerous looking Bunting was run out after running in to his partner and dropping his bat.

Kelly and Woolatt both hit the ball straight powerfully and it was the reintroduction of spin that led to the breakthrough with Kelly bowled.  When Woolatt holed out at long off and Pitts was given out lbw to Doc we had about four overs to take the last three wickets.

It wasn’t to be though as the young McCormick played very sensibly to secure the draw for NPL Teddington.

With some surprise results in the rest of the division it remains incredibly tight; just over 30 points between top and bottom.  Anything could happen and every point is going to be important.
