Theale & Tilehurst 1st  XI vs Bracknell 1st XI

25th June 2011

Report by James.

A good all round performance saw T&T return to winning ways against Bracknell.  Wiggy won the toss and chose to bat, which was a positive move on an overcast day and a pitch that had been under covers for the last 24 hours.  There had been some debate about bowling first, but the appeal of a potential 25 points and a long batting line up was the deciding factor.  The innings started brightly with James & Sunny both hitting a couple of early boundaries, but as the Bracknell bowlers settled James gloved a rising delivery from Mahmood to the keeper and Wiggy was bowled by an excellent delivery from Pawar which pitched on leg and hit the top of off (according to Wiggy anyway).  Sunny and Ash then settled into an excellent partnership of 79, characterised by some fluent strokeplay and excellent placement of the ball backed up by positive running.  They eventually worked out an effective method of calling, but no-one was quite sure what it was.  Ash was bowled by a sharply turning delivery from Dewick for 36, and Sunny also fell in similar fashion for a well made 65.  This then left Steve & Jamil together for a partnership of 77 which took the game away from Bracknell – Jamil in particular looked in good touch and he added some pace to the innings with an aggressive 50.  Jamil, Steve & Harry fell in quick succession as we looked to pick up the pace for an early declaration.  This was another positive move from Wiggy, who was keen to keep Bracknell interested in the chase which would offer us the best chance of taking the 10 wickets we needed for the win.

The new ball was taken and whilst neither of the Chrises bowled badly, Mahmood was particularly savage on anything short or with any width and was soon into his stride.  With Caffell looking solid at the other end a few of us with long memories were wondering whether the declaration might backfire.  Rob came on and also bowled well enough without much luck, but suffered a similar fate to the others as Mahmood raced past 50.  So it was time to change the pace, and Ash struck immediately to remove the dangerous Mahmood for 72 (out of an opening stand of 93).  Caffell followed shortly after, taking on Wiggy’s arm at short fine leg and losing, with Phil doing the rest and with two new batsmen at the crease the game was changing quickly.  The game continued at a fast pace, with Harry replacing Rob, and wickets and runs came quickly.  Ash bowled Fernley and had Dewick lbw, and in between Lemmy took a well judged catch from a top edge by Shaw to give Harry a deserved wicket.  Lemmy took another mis-hit from Ashger to give Ash his 4th wicket, then Cooky replaced Harry at the School End and immediately had Dixon lbw trying to pull a ball that was too full for the shot.  He followed up by bowling Stone in his next over and Bracknell were now reeling at 171-8.  It was left to Ash to finish off the innings, deceiving Pawar  with a slightly slower ball which he chipped back for a caught & bowled, and then last man Henly had to untangle himself after being bowled by a leg break (or was it an off-break – did anyone see the signal?)

So, well bowled Ash with a match-winning 6-34.  And well done to Wiggy for holding his nerve and keeping Bracknell interested in the chase by declaring early and having attacking fields in place to encourage some strokeplay.  We’ve all played in games which have petered out into draws, but this was a good example of how the fielding side can keep the game moving along.  There were a couple of occasions where it looked as though Bracknell might be getting too close for comfort, but the bowlers backed the captain up with wickets a crucial intervals and we ended up comfortable winners.
