Theale & Tilehurst friendly XI vs Twyford friendly XI

31st July 2011

Report by Fingers.

The Sunday after tour saw the visit of Twyford to Theale with a few tired players to welcome them.

Dougie won the toss and made the obvious decision to bat first.  Sunny and Micky opened the batting and got us off to a good start.  Both gave chances in the first 15 overs but by the time the first drinks were served the score had made it to 105-0 on a pitch that was playing truly and on a lightning fast outfield. Unsurprisingly it was Sunil that was the more fluent and aggressive.

Having already put one six on to the pavilion roof and broken a tile Sunny put another six over long on to bring up a fine hundred, his sixth for T&T. Sunil retired at that point and after a brief cameo from Charlie it was the 11 year old Imran who made his way to the crease in his first senior game.

Imran looked at ease as he worked the ball around in combination with Micky.  Micky was happy to feed Imran the strike not perhaps realising how close he was to a century.  Micky was finally caught at mid on well taken by Leadbetter to fall for 98 at which point Dougie declared with the score on 254-3.

The start of the second innings was bizarre to say the least.  Michael opened the bowling and to the first ball Woodman got a ball that took the shoulder of his bat and thudded in to his chest.  Understandably to the next ball he was reluctant to get forward and was bowled.  However, when the ball made it back to the umpire he observed that it was the wrong ball and rather than the shredded ball we should have been using a somewhat newer ball had appeared.  Woodman was recalled by Dougie and the innings started again.
Woodman did better second time round and in tandem with former T&T colt Manan Narula put on 75 for the first wicket. Both went in quick succession before Tugnit and Woodbridge had another good partnership for the 3rd wicket.

At 171-2 and with the run rate seemingly well under control Twyford were probably favourites but we managed to start taking wickets on a regular basis.  Jamaal took his first senior wicket on debut, Rob was summoned from behind the stumps to get things under control and Imran also picked up a couple of wickets.
In the end we ran out winners by 35 runs with 2.5 overs to spare in what had been a very good game of cricket.
