Complete Madness

Complete madness

I arrived at the ground soon after 11.00am to tidy up the square after the u17s fantastic win over Purley on the Friday.  It soon became quite a GREY DAY and there was the threat of rain in the air so the covers were duly pulled out to cover the track.  There was a light shower but certainly no where near enough rain had fallen to sail a NIGHT BOAT TO CAIRO and the track looked like a great batting surface.

After the EMBARRASSMENT of the result against Odiham the previous week it was important that we got back to winning ways.  Wiggy went out to toss with oppo. skipper and was completely taken aback by his decision to put us in – MADNESS! Sunny and James opened up and after a steady start Sunny went for 14 in the 8th over.  Sunny was clearly not feeling too good and when he couldn’t find a local BED AND BREAKFAST MAN decided to go and have a sleep on the bench in the changing room for half an hour or so.

James was joined by Harry and scoring became very fluent.  Harry went on to make a well crafted 43 and James played THE PRINCE of an innings with brilliant 75. At 27 overs gone I was asked to take over the scorebook from Jamil – I nearly had a CARDIAC ARREST as took me the remainder of the innings to work out quite what he’d done and get the numbers to all add back! Only Jamil failed with the bat as Ash, 37, Rob, 42 and Wiggy 42 n.o. all contributed in free flowing style.  Wiggy decided to declare at 276 for 6 in the 45th over.  It was a batting performance ONE STEP BEYOND anything we’d managed the previous week.

At the tea interval the Peter Gooch Room was, for the home side, a HOUSE OF FUN.  Cookie provided a great tea, although to honest, when having to field second I can either TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT – there’s always the option of a curry IN THE CITY after the match. I had hoped MY GIRL might turn up around tea time to help clear up but unfortunately that was not so we were indebted to Bob who very kindly washed up and cleared away for us – thank you very much Bob - IT MUST BE LOVE.

Wiggy decided we’d start in the field with the old ball and some spin and our exploits couldn’t have got off to a better start with Ash getting Biggs full on the boot right in front of his stumps first ball, it was a sign of what was to come. The second wicket fell with the score on 8, quickly followed by the 3rd and 4th for the addition of only 2 more runs. Wickets were falling quickly and the score was barely moving as Ash and Harry were both getting the ball to move in ridiculous directions off the surface.  In fact, it was not just the batsmen that were struggling with the turn, for the first few overs I was top scoring for the oppo. in byes – and didn’t my team mates rub it in!

Harry continued to struggle to stop his trousers falling down throughout the game – I really think he needs to get some more BAGGY TROUSERS with plenty of room for his backside and maybe a belt.

James and Steve both took very good catches in the slips off Harry and Ash respectively as Finch moved to 27 for 6.  The Finch skipper, Arnold then came to the middle and began to score fluently, however, despite some partnerships starting to get off the ground, wickets continued to fall.  When I did managed to hold on to a Harry delivery to stump Foster at last everyone SHUT UP about all the byes. When Ash got Clarke, the ninth wicket for THE RETURN OF (THE LOS PALMAS) 7 for 37 from 16 overs, we thought the conclusion to the match was just around the corner, however there was a decent 10th wicket stand between Arnold (69 n.o.) and Brown (8) and it was left to Cookie from the 1st ball of his 3rd over to get Brown, caught Sunil, to finish off the game, Finch eventually all out for 156 in the 37th over

Full marks to Finch for fighting right until the end.
