Theale & Tilehurst 2nd  XI vs Teddington Town 2nd XI

6th August 2011

Report by Speedo.

Usually Tuesdays are busy with selection discussions but this week we had our meeting at Sweeney's on a Monday night. As always there was the odd dilemma but in the end I decided to eat at home and then again out at Sweeney's. I picked my choice early and went for the "Vicars" pie. Anyway what's this got to do with the match report - well I've some extra time so I thought I'd write a rare second eleven report. I'm not promising I can be up to the standards of Arsalan but I'll try my best.

We arrived early and late....and some in the middle. We won the toss and batted. We were quickly under the cosh with only Micky from the top 4 bedding in for a decent innings. The excellent looking pitch had some bounce, seemed and swung. Well the ball swang rather than the pitch. When Micky and Hammad were out be looked in dire trouble at 97-5 in about 30 odd overs. Talk was of trying to make it to 175 for get some batting points and get us something to bowl at. Their excellent left arm bowler had bowled no-stop from one end with 3 for nowtish (in the end he bowled 20 overs in his first spell). Osman looked comfortable but was struggling to score fluently. Bondy had to be careful early especially as they bowled spin - no doubt looking for a stumping. They finally saw off the left-armer and began gradually to score freely. Thoughts now turned to a score over 200 and these estimates quickly rose as did the scoring rate. The combination of Os rotating the strike and Bondy smashing the ball all around the park lifted the rate over 10 an over. Bondies pull was particularly effective. Both bought up fifties (Bondies first for the club) and for a while we wondered if Bondy could get to his Ton. Finally in the last over they milked the last few runs of there club record 6th wicket partnership of 156no.

Without doubt they taken us from a match losing position to a match winning position. As we say it's partnerships you need and what a partnership. 256 was probably 25 over par on a flat wicket which had something in it for the bowler.

We took the new ball and initially struggled to cause the batsmen issues. However the introduction of Naz and Rams steadily improving spell started to have results. The ball wasn't swinging but there was plenty of life in the pitch. Suddenly chances were coming including two drops in Naz's first over. Fortunately these didn't cost us as first Naz and then Ram made breakthroughs including a hat-trick chance for Ram. By now Ram was testing every batsmen. They were 70 odd for 5 and we were well on top but there number 5 was a good bat and the number 7 appeared to be the best batsman we'd seen so far. Ram was tiring but kept taking wickets in his 'final' over to get one more. After 14 excellent overs he came off and soon after Naz was replaced after a excellent 'fast' spell that was better than his figures suggest. Bondy got his first wicket of the season with a full bunger and Fingers got the crucial wicket of their number 7 to leave us 13 overs at the last pair. Bondy managed the last wicket without us having to wait too long with the batsman playing on.

So we'd taken 10 wickets and picked up 25 points. Ram reminded us of his quality with a fine 6 for. But most of all we'd found a way to win from two difficult positions. As with the first game Teddington Town were a good bunch and the game was played in a fine spirit.
