Theale & Tilehurst 1st  XI vs Bracknell 1st XI

27th August 2011

Report by James.

A much changed 1st XI arrived at Bracknell knowing that only a maximum points win would be enough to keep us in with an outside chance of promotion if results elsewhere went our way.  The fact that we all arrived at Bracknell in time for the start was something of an achievement in itself as we had two late enforced changes to the side which added to the already complex transport arrangements – fortunately Sunil was kind enough to drive all the way to Tilehurst from Slough to pick up our two late additions (well done to Andy & Indy for turning out at such short notice), and he was obviously enjoying the M4 to such an extent that he missed Junction 10 on the way back and had to go all the way back to Maidenhead to turn round again!  Bondy also went on a magical mystery tour of Bracknell Town Centre after a mishap with the Sat Nav and Justin’s directions.  After the morning we’d had it was inevitable that we’d lose the toss, but Bracknell put us in so at least it left us with the possibility of 25 points if we could win the game.

James & Sunil opened and it was immediately obvious that the pitch was a lot wetter than it looked and batting was likely to be difficult, especially against the new ball.  James departed in the 3rd over after edging a ball that bounced more than expected.  Sunil batted very sensibly in difficult conditions, waiting for anything overpitched to drive.  Aygzz struggled to settle and then missed a pull shot to be bowled which brought Ash to the crease.  Both Sunny & Ash looked fairly comfortable, and they managed to accumulate runs steadily, but when Sunny edged a drive to the keeper just after drinks it proved to be the start of a collapse which saw us lose 5-25 in 7 overs. Rob & Bondy both missed swinging deliveries from Pawar, whilst Ash & James B fell to the spin of Dewick.  Ram & Andy both batted very sensibly to add 35 for the 8th wicket before Andy fell to Dewick trying to pick up the pace in the last few overs.  Ram was then bowled by a Mahmood yorker and Indy fell lbw to Dewick leaving Phil J stranded on 0 not out without having faced a ball (and pointing out that another major Jenkins innings had been cut short).  We felt at tea that 154 was slightly below par, but was enough to leave us with a chance if we took early wickets.

The 2nd Innings began with spin at both ends, and the game advanced at a quick pace.  After a couple of looseners had been despatched for four Ash had Pawar lbw at the end of the first over, then followed up by removing the dangerous Mahmood first ball at the beginning of the 3rd over.  Fernley & Uppal steadied the innings for Bracknell with a partnership of 44, which was broken when Sunil took a great one handed catch in the gully, diving to his left.  Ash followed up by bowling Dewick with a beauty and having Shaw lbw leaving Bracknell at 96-5 and the game in the balance.  Rob replaced Bondy who had toiled away without success and had Fernley lbw with a full length ball that nipped back sharply, leaving the score at 100-6 and two new batsmen at the crease.  Daines & Richards then played solidly and added a further 21 runs before Rob found the edge of Daines’ bat with Phil taking a good low catch, leaving Asgar & Richards to finish the game with a few clean hits.  As it turned out we were a few runs short, but we worked hard in the field and nearly managed to pull off what would have been an excellent win.  But fair play to Bracknell – they were deserving winners on the day and in particular they bowled well in helpful conditions – 7 bowled, 1 lbw and two edges suggests they generally bowled a good line & length.
